ReplyDeleteWaitangi Day.
Waitangi Day is celebrated because of a treaty that was signed on 6th February 1840. Representatives of the British Crown and various Maori Chiefs from the North Island came to sign the treaty. This was signed at Waitangi. This established a British Governor for New Zealand. This gave Maori rights to be British subjects. This also gave Britain sovereignty and gave the Governor rights to govern New Zealand, in exchange for protection. The treaty was generally ignored until the 1960’s. Waitangi has been celebrated since 1974.

ReplyDeleteWaitangi Day is important to New Zealanders because it is the day that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It was an agreement between the British Crown and Maori Chiefs giving control of land and laws to the British Governer of New Zealand. It was signed on February the 6th 1840 in Waitangi in Northland. The 6th of February each year is now a public holiday in New Zealand. :)
